Mac diary

Yesterday I went to Amsterdam to pick up my brand new MacBook Pro! It’s the first time I have ever owned a Mac and decided to write down my experiences with the device the upcoming days/weeks/whatever. I thought it’d be a fun read for myself in a year or so, plus I get to fill my blog again which I have neglected for months!

So, I’ve been interested in getting a Mac for a long time. I don’t know why, but it was just a little voice in my head nagging “Get it get it get it!”, I’m sure you know the feeling. So when the 2010 refresh of the MacBooks arrived a few weeks back, I felt it was the proper time to go for it.

Some may think “What is this Mac thing you speak of?”. Well, those people are probably the ones thinking all computers run Windows. If you look past Windows, there’s a whole world of other systems that can run on your computer! I have always been a fan of these other systems, like Linux and BSD, and Mac is one of them. The difference is that Mac OS X is only available on Apple computers, usually considered a luxury product which does not come cheap. I’ll leave the “other OS” topic at that.

Since I had little time left yesterday with me coming home late (I had to drive to Amsterdam and back after work to pick up the laptop, which took a little over 3 hours) and having some friends over to discuss activities for upcoming Friday (Queen’s Day!) I did not get to explore the system very much. Not a bad thing, since this article only serves as an introduction :-)

Things I noticed thus far:

  • I see no computer-is-starting-up procedure, so no weird texts flying over the screen anymore.
  • I haven’t had to answer any odd or technical question thus far. It all Just Works with me only having to enter some account information.
  • Suddenly I saw myself on the screen when I had to make a picture for my profile. It was the on board web cam. Fun! My friend and I made a nice picture of our beers for now.
  • Hey, where’s my right mouse button? Only now I came to realise how much you use that thing. I guess I have to look up how that works on a Mac.
  • Hey, where’s my left mouse button? I only have this huge touch pad. Apparently the mouse button is hidden underneath the touch pad at the bottom. Very cool.
  • The laptop itself is as thin is my previous’ laptop’s display!

I’ll dive into the workings of the system later on :-)

Ah hell, after 2 days I figured adding more will be a drag and won’t contain anything interesting at all so I won’t :-P

A shame you traded in the Nerd/fun land for fashion boy land ;(

And if you buy a Mac, buy atleast the Mac Book Air, that’s like an Ipad with an actual keyboard!
